I am off! With my legs crossed!

I can’t believe that it is already here! The past few months my life has been revolving around preparing for Peru. I can’t believe I am finally on my way! Yippee! But I almost missed it!

Exhausted on my 1am flight from Portland to Denver

You know that panic that we all have- about having our flight times wrong and missing our flight? Don’t act like you don’t know what I am talking about. I know you do!!! Well…I almost had that happen to me. I had my flight details memorized. But it has been so far in the future for so long- in my brain I changed the date. I was talking to my business partner yesterday morning and she asked if we were still meeting on Friday. I responded. “Uh- No. I am not even leaving until Friday at Midnight!” I paused and then the moment of realization- oh crap! I am leaving tonight. I still had errands for the trip, laundry, etc. I had this whole nice relaxed departure agenda. I guess that wasn’t going to happen!

Leaving Portland- Let the adventure begin

Then the panic set in. I literally started shaking in fear and excitement. Was I packing the right stuff. What was I forgetting. I haven’t gotten myself as hydrated as I had planned to before the trip. What was I thinking-It is going to be so hot- I am going to die. Do I have the right clothing. Round and round I went with one area of panic to another. I was literally nauseous!

I went to REI to get a travel towel and discovered that I need to spray down all my clothes with the Permethrin insect repellent. So I had to unpack, spray down my clothes and let them dry. While I was at REI- it was hard to not get sucked into all the many things that might be useful. Who doesn’t want everything in the store? I know I do. πŸ™‚

My Packing List

By the time I got to the airport. I was able to be calm. Well…Compared to earlier. Normally I have no problem sleeping on planes. Not today. Partly from the adrenaline of my upcoming trip. But mostly I Really, Really needed to go to the bathroom. I think this might be a theme of this trip. I am already worried about this on my rafting days…Stay posted on the peeing on the raft.

Back to my story. I had a headache so I was worried about dehydration. So, I drank a can of seltzer water on the way to the airport. While waiting I drank another liter of water. Funny thing- What goes in- must go out! So although I went to the bathroom about 30 minutes before boarding. I needed to go again as soon as I boarded the plane. But I had a window seat and I didn’t want to bother the people sitting next to me. Plus I really try to avoid going to the bathroom on planes. It was getting more and more uncomfortable. Just when I was to the point where I could barely handle it anymore, they announced that we were not allowed to leave our seats for the remainder of the flight. Crap!!! I wasn’t sure I could make it. I kept thinking that this was training for the raft. I was in excruciating pain by this time. The bump of the wheels was not pleasant. Then of course we had to sit on the tarmac. Finally, I was able to get de-board the plane. I practically ran to the restroom. I was the first person off the plane.

Chilling in DIA-

There are always glitches when you travel. But things always have a way of working out.

My luggage made it. Do you love my paddle?

P.S. Don’t travel with gummy bears if you don’t want your bags searched. It didn’t even occur to me that they would think they were drugs. I was glad I didn’t put them in smaller ziplock bags. πŸ™‚
